P.U.D.G.E.’s music is out of this world, reminiscent of Earthly music and sounds encapsulated and edited by an otherworldly being. With handful of LP’s under his belt, including a Radiohead tribute beat tape, P.U.D.G.E.’s songs all feature similar elements but never sounds alike. Combining heavily distorted samples, electronic beats and sounds, tweaked synths, and live drumming, among a slew of other elements, P.U.D.G.E. sounds almost futuristic through its sound of concentrated experimentation. Each song progresses with chaotic order that keeps heads nodding and ears captivated.

Hailing from the Southwest, Texas instrumental band Snarky Puppy is the definition of fusion. Snarky Puppy combines a smorgasbord of instruments while creating a seamless sound of funky jazz. They continue their experiment with merging genres on their 6th and most recent LP, Ground Up, a CD/DVD collective recorded and filmed live in studio to a 40 person audience. Ground Up features the band’s trademark extensive collection of sounds like blaring horns reminiscent of Big Band, swinging bass of the Funk era, striking organs reminiscent of Soul, psychedelic Progressive Rock influenced keys, fast paced drums that mix Samba and dance, and a modern rock usage of guitars. Snarky Puppy is a group of music lovers down to their core and their take on Funk Jazz only expresses that while influencing listeners to share the love.

An unsigned independent artist, she has been making strides within the music industry working with artists like Flying Lotus, Common and The Foreign Exchange, as well as having a Grammy nomination under her belt for Best Urban/Alternative Performance for her 2009 album Daybreak 2.0 Even Radiohead’s Thom Yorke gave her a shout out on the band’s official blog site. When Muhsinah’s not collaborating with established producers and artists, she produces complex beats amidst angelic harmonies and melodies, creating an illustrious atmosphere of classically influenced electro R&B with psychedelic elements sure to satisfy music aficionados of all genre preferences.

His previous LP, New Age Outlaws, and last year’s EP, Lion of Judah, feature otherworldly sounds on top of repetitive melodies reminiscent of a free form psychedelic sound that gets you lost and reeling. On his recently released LP, Lifetime of Romance, Ettinger has set the stakes higher for himself adding heavy vocals and sincere lyrics. Lifetime of Romance resembles more of 80s synth pop sound than his previous work, while his new NSFW video for “Wintermute” visually introduces audiences to his new style. “Wintermute” is an art student music video at heart featuring an insane amount of tight edits that transports characters and viewers to different locations and time frames all in the span of seconds. Shot in a mixture of black and white, solarized effects and saturated color, “Wintermute” gives a new aged psychedelic look to Ettinger’s retro pop sound.

Watch the video for “Wintermute” below and be sure to check out Dylan Ettinger when he stops by Atlanta:

For April’s installment of SOLF, we’re turning the spotlight on our eclectic cousin from the mountains, Asheville’s own Peripheral. Mike McBride started making waves in the electronic scene a few years ago with his debut album, Elli-veh-sa. This album gave most of us our introduction to Peripheral’s jazz influenced brand of downtempo electronic music. His glass-smooth melodies and washed sound design created surreal soundscapes where the listener could be just as satisfied lost in thought as they could giving into the more percussive aspects and peppered bass drops of McBride’s aural offspring. It was certainly a strong entrance to say the least.

Post Elli-veh-sa, Peripheral has stayed plenty busy manning keyboard duties for both renowned Asheville experimental groups Paper Tiger and Sonmi (the latter of which he is a founding member and primary producer). In addition, McBride has over time slowly rolled out an impressive collection of new tracks and remixes on his Soundcloud page, with each track exponentially building the anticipation for another proper Peripheral release. In the meantime, fans will have to be satiated by experiencing his new material during his equally impressive live set.

Below you can listen to Peripheral’s stunning debut album, Elli-veh-sah, along with tonight’s show listing.

When she’s not doing so with her three piece band Follie Englise, she’s captivating ears under her solo moniker, Chicaloyoh. Dourlen takes a bare minimum approach, playing resonating guitar riffs and notes intertwined with scarce drum beats and echoing vocals. By mixing all of these elements heavily with distorted reverb, Chicaloyoh creates a lonely destitute sound that lingers in the air like a feather. While Chicaloyoh’s sound is soft and hypnotic, it harnesses a raw, grungy energy through her experimentation with the impromptu noise rock sound.

Check out Chicaloyoh’s most recent tracks below and be sure to see her at FREE ACID:

Mux Mool’s name alone is intriguing. When explaining the origin of his alias, Brooklyn native Brian Lindgren stated, “Mux is an abbreviation for ‘multiplexing’ which is the streaming of many types of information through one channel and Chac-Mool is an ancient Meso-American statue of a reclining man.”After a listen of his sophomore album, Planet High School, Mux Mool’s name couldn’t be more self explanatory of his style. Featuring an array of sounds from airy synth jams to multi-layered complex tracks structured around live instruments mixed with samples, Planet High School is the type of album that is the product of a genre mashing generation. After releasing a slew of EPs and his 2010 debut Skulltaste, Mux Mool has been making a name for himself with his genre mixing G-funk sound, one that needs to be heard on a dance floor surrounded by sweating bodies.

Check out Mux Mool’s sophomore release, Planet High School below and be sure to be on the dance floor for his next two shows:

Releasing his first EP, Beginner’s Luck, Deku’s talent proves to anything but mere luck. Complete with an array of influences from trip hop to shoegaze, Beginner’s Luck is an EP of soft melodic noise that makes a strong resonating impact. Beginner’s Luck consists of mostly atmospheric songs that blend perfectly together for a soothing and serene sound that combines the complexity of electronic music with comforting and relaxing ambiance. The EP hosts a number of songs featuring beautiful strings and synths that are like lullaby’s but quickly transform into placid head nodding sounds that are sure to set calmness to the most frazzled ears to zone out and vibe to.
